s in other parts of southern Italy, Greek colonists introduced the olive into Calabria around the 9th-8th centuries BCE. The tree, its fruit and the oil obtained from it have been essential elements of the Calabrian landscape and life-style ever since. The Lametia DOP production zone is centered on the Tyrrhenian seaside resort of Lamezia Terme. The town is situated in a plain that is enclosed inland by an arc of foothills and mountains. The zone is located to the west of Catanzaro and includes all or parts of the communes of Curinga, Filadelfia, Francavilla Angitola, Maida, San Pietro a Maida, Gizzeria, Feroleto Antico and Pianopoli as well as Lamezia Terme. This oil is pressed primarily from the Carolea variety (90%), while the remaining 10% is obtained from other types of olives. The trees grow in soils of alluvial origin that are highly permeable and deep, sandy and of medium consistency. For new orchards, modern training systems are permitted with densities of up to 162 an acre. In any case, production in specialized orchards cannot exceed 5.8 tons an acre. Harvesting can begin at veraison, when the olives begin to change color, and cannot continue beyond January 15 of the following year. The oil can be extracted and bottled only in the delimited zone. The color of Lametia extra virgin olive oil ranges from green to straw yellow, while the odor is fruity and the flavor is delicately fruity. Maximum total acidity, expressed in oleic acid, must not exceed 0.5 grams per 100 grams. The oil is offered to consumers in glass bottles or cans with capacities of no more than 5 liters.
