he cultivation of olives for oil on the Sorrento Peninsula has a long history stretching back to ancient times. The land around Capo Minerva, now known as Punta Campanella, was dedicated to the worship of Minerva, goddess of wisdom to whom the Focesi tribe built a temple. Pilgrims came to the temple bearing olive oil as an offering to the goddess who was believed to be its inventor. To cater to this tradition, olives were intensely farmed along the approach route to the temple. The particular orographic features of the area which oblige growers to make use of costly terraces, the typically Mediterranean climate, the protective barrier formed by the mountain range to the north, and the volcanic soils all combine to create a very original and distinctive landscape, just as the oil it produces is also original and distinctive. Olio Extravergine d'Oliva Penisola Sorrentina has an acidity of 0.80 percent. Its colour ranges from green to yellow. The scent is fruity as is the taste which also, however, contains some peppery and bitter tones. The distinctive properties of Olio Extravergine d'Oliva Colline Penisola Sorrentina are derived from the raw materials such as the Minucciola variety of olive which was brought to Campania by the Greeks and has been established in the area so long that it is now regarded as practically autochthonous. This and other varieties, which have evolved into many ecotypes in the course of 2000 years, are to be found only on the Sorrento Peninsula as they have proved unsuccessful at adapting to other environments. The zone in which the DOP extra virgin olive oil is produced consists of the section of the Sorrento Peninsula that falls within the administrative remit of the province of Naples.
