he chestnut was introduced to Castel del Rio in the late Middle Ages and became an important part of the local economy. The great importance of the chestnut to the area is mentioned in several historical documents, most notably an "Edict on the Tapping of Chestnut Trees" which is contained in the municipal archives of Castel del Rio. The Marrone di Castel del Rio is medium-large in size, ellipsoidal in shape and flat at the top. The seed consists of a crunchy white pulp with an agreeably sweet taste. The importance of the crop is evident in the fact that some seventy per cent of local economic operators derive their income from activities related to chestnut growing. The chestnut is grown in a number of town districts located in the province of Bologna.
