Nocciola di Giffoni (IGP)

Indicazione Geografica Protetta

ampania is the most ancient hazelnut growing area of Italy. Whenever Roman authors referred to this plant, they almost always also mentioned the region of Campania. As long ago as the late 1700s, Giffoni was renowned as a hazelnut-growing area. The hazel was already growing wild in the area and was therefore regarded as an obvious candidate for further cultivation. In the last century, the cultivation of the hazelnut in the Giffoni territory expanded thanks to a sharp increase in demand from the confectionery industry which valued the morphological and organoleptic qualities of the nut. The Nocciola di Giffoni is medium-sized and shaped like a slightly flattened sphere. Its light brown shell is streaked with darker brown. The pulp is white, firm in texture and fragrant. The "Tonda di Giffoni" variety grows well in this area thanks to the fertile soils of volcanic origin. The area of cultivation encompasses many town districts in the province of Salerno.
