Pera dell'Emilia-Romagna (IGP)

Indicazione Geografica Protetta

he first historical mention of the Pera dell'Emilia Romagna was in the early 1300s. Pears were commonly grown in Emilia Romagna long before the rest of Italy. By way of example, one of the towns within the area of cultivation contains a fresco from 1450 known as the "Madonna with pears," a clear indication of the presence of the fruit at the time. The Pera dell'Emilia Romagna comes in several varieties which we may list as follows: Abate Fetel, Cascade, Conference, Decana del Comizio, Kaiser, Max Red Bartlett, Passa Crassana and Williams. As the fruit is highly susceptible to the damaging influence of frost, the orchards are located within a circumscribed area where the mean annual temperature is higher and mean precipitation lower than elsewhere in the region. This area is so conducive to the fruit that half the national pear crop comes from here. The area extends across numerous town districts in the provinces of Bologna, Modena, Reggio Emilia, Ferrara and Ravenna.
