he first citrus trees were introduced in the province of Taranto, in Apulia, in the seventeenth century, but it wasn't until 1900 that citrus groves became the main produce of local fruit farming. Gulf of Taranto clementine is mostly grown in the territories of the province of Taranto, along the coastline of the gulf from which it takes its name.
In the 1950s, thanks to the agrarian reform and the creation of a new, efficient irrigation system, citrus farming started to spread quickly, so much so that today it has become the most important agricultural product in this area. The relatively dry, warm and sunny climate here plays a major role in conferring the Gulf of Taranto clementine its beautiful color, excellent flavor, and its long shelf life.
The Gulf of Taranto clementine is delicious eaten on its own or used in the preparation of juices, syrups, iced sorbets and marmalades. It is also used in cosmetics as an ingredient for invigorating lotions and face masks.
