he bean was introduced to the Belluno area in 1532 by the humanist scholar Pietro Valeriano who had received a gift of some seeds from Pope Clement VII. In 1700, a treatise on agriculture in the Feltre district made reference to a type of bean that was much sought-after, and in the same period a number of scholars noted that beans from the Feltre area were held to be the best in the province. The Fagiolo di Lamon della Vallata Bellunese, a bean cultivated in the Belluno valley, may be divided into four main ecotypes: Spagnolo, Calonega, Canalino and Spagnolit. This last type is particularly prized for its delicate flavour and extremely tender skin. It is rather round in shape and may display a bright stripe against an off-white background. The local climatic conditions provide an ideal substratum for the growth of beans with unsur-passed organoleptic qualities such as their wafer-thin and soluble skins. The production area encompasses several town districts in the province of Belluno.
