Trim, peel and boil the asparagus in salted water until tender but not limp.
Preheat oven to 400 F. Place the asparagus lengthwise in a buttered baking dish, staggering them so that the tips protrude. Dot with the remaining butter, add the cheese and bake until the top forms a light brown crust.
