In 1851 the Sallegg Castle with all the surrounding vineyards was bought by Archduke Rainer of Austria, Viceroy of Lombardy-Veneto. It was then inherited by the Counts von Kuenburg from Prince Henry of Campofranco. In the area surrounding Lake Caldaro, on the sloping hillsides, Sallegg Castle’s wines are produced. The unique interaction of the landscape, the composition of the soil and the mutual influences of Mediterranean and Alpine climates give the wines of Sallegg Castle their incomparable character. The absolutely natural cultivation of the vines, the careful selection of the grapes already in the vineyard and the use of only its own grapes, are the secrets for the production of these high class wines. The Castle’s ancient cellars, reaching a depth of three floors underground, provide constant temperatures and the ideal conditions to slowly age fine wines in oak barrels.
