As part of the VINO 2009 conference on Italian Wines, the Italian Trade Commission has announced the recipients of its inaugural Distinguished Service Awards honoring professionals in the wine industry who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the understanding, appreciation and sales of Italian wines in the United States.
A total of 232 honorees from 21 states will receive Distinguished Service Awards certificates, including leading wine importers, distributors, retailers, restaurateurs, educators and journalists.

Eight Distinguished Service Awards honorees will be inducted into the Italian Trade Commission’s Hall of Fame for their outstanding leadership, contribution and lifelong dedication to the appreciation, education and marketing of Italian wines in the U.S. at an awards dinner to be held January 27th at the Rainbow Room in New York City.
The VINO 2009 Distinguished Service Hall of Fame inductees include: Burton Anderson, author/journalist, The Wines and Winemakers of Italy; Darrell Corti, co-owner, Corti Brothers (Sacramento, CA); Victor Hazan, author, Italian Wine; Leonardo LoCascio, President, CEO and Founder, Winebow; Dr. John Mariani, Jr., Chairman Emeritus, Banfi Vintners and Castello Banfi; Hubert Opici, Chairman of the Board, Opici Wine Group; Piero Selvaggio, proprietor, Valentino Ristorante (Santa Monica, CA) and Anthony Terlato, Chairman, Terlato Wine Group.
"Over the years a growing number of Americans have devoted their professional life to the promotion and sale of Italian wine in the United States," said Aniello Musella, Italian Trade Commissioner – Executive Director for the USA. "They have done so with such passion and drive that they have generated the momentum that inspired countless others to follow suit. Their efforts have helped to make Italian wines America’s number one imported table wines and have helped raise the image of Italian wines in the marketplace to unparalleled levels."
"For a long time, it has come to our attention that the efforts of these pioneers have never been formally acknowledged by the Italian wine industry. This year the Italian Trade Commission has decided to create and present the Distinguished Service Awards to finally recognize these individuals. The awards truly are a Who’s Who of the Italian wine industry in the United States," continued Musella.
The Italian Trade Commission has also chosen to recognize posthumously individuals who served as the "pioneers of Italian wine in the U.S." and whose efforts paved the ways for introducing consumers in the U.S. to the wines of Italy. "These individuals were truly the first 'goodwill ambassadors' for Italian wines in the U.S.," said Musella.
The posthumous Distinguished Service Awards Hall of Fame honorees include: Louis Bonaccolta, president, Trebon Wine & Spirits Corporation; Aldo di Belardino, founder, Mediterranean Importing Company; Marchese Lino DeVito di Porriasa, Remy Cointreau/Antinori; Frank Giambelli, Giambelli’s Ristorante, New York; John Given, president, John Given Wines; Louis Jacucci, owner, Goldstar Wines & Spirits; Giancarlo Manzin, president, Bianco Rosso Imports; Lucio Sorre, senior vice president, Banfi Vintners; and Sheldon Wasserman, author Italy’s Noble Red Wines.
VINO 2009 was created by the Italian Trade Commission to bring together all different interests within the Italian wine business, to raise greater awareness for Italy's range of wines and their marketing potential, to foster business relationships between Italian wine producers and buyers in the U.S. and to address trends and transitions in the wine business.
