The Italian Trade Commission, in partnership with Regione Calabria, is hosting Discovering Calabria, a wine and foods sampling event for guests to experience a taste of pure Italy.
The event precedes a shop & dine promotional campaign launching on June 10, 2009 by the ItalianTrade Commission to educate and inform the patrons of restaurant, wine bar, wine shop and gourmet stores about the foods and wines from the region of Calabria, Italy. Restaurants and wine bars have created special by-the-glass, flights and pairing menus offering a chance to explore their menus and in turn discover Calabria. Wine shops and gourmet stores, on the other hand, have organized tasting events and in-store promotions all creating a memorable and engaging experience with the foods and wines of Calabria.
Discovering Calabria is being held at the Astor Center, 399 Lafayette, New York, on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. David Lynch, General Manager and Wine Director of The John Dory restaurant, is the event’s Master of Ceremonies, and will share his knowledge and stories of the region from his travels there. Guests will discover how Calabria’s rustic foods and legendary wines are as rich and interesting as the region’s history.
Leading the wine sampling seminar, “Gaglioppo the Great: The New Generation of Calabrian Reds”, will be New York-based wine expert, journalist and educator, Anthony Giglio, who has written several books, including Food & Wine Magazine’s Wine Guide 2009. Giglio will explain why and how Calabrian soil produces the grapes it does and the varieties of wines available including 2005 vintages such as Librandi Cirò Rosso Riserva DOC “Duca San Felice”, Ippolito 1845 Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva DOC “Colli del Mancuso”, Terre di Balbia Calabria IGT “SerraMonte”, Fattoria San Francesco Cirò Rosso Classico DOC “Ronco dei Quattro Venti”; 2004 vintages such as Val di Neto Melissa Rosso Superiore DOC “Mutrò”, Tenuta Iuzzolini Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva DOC “Maradea”, Odoardi Scavigna DOC “Vigna Garrone”, and a Statti Calabria IGT “Gaglioppo Rosso 2008”.
Small as the region is, Calabria currently devotes nearly 60,000 acres to grapevines, and includes 12 DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) appellations, 13 IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) appellations, and almost three-dozen major and secondary grape varieties. About 91% of calabria’s wine production is red or rosé, with a large portion made from the indigenous Gaglioppo grape; however, Calabria’s DOCs also produce exquisitely delicate whites, as well as a few sparkling, dessert and fortified wines. Chief among these appellations is Cirò (cheer-O) which according to local legend, is the oldest continuously made wine in the world, dating back over 2,500 years.
Rosetta Costantino, a native of Calabria, will lead the food session, “Calabria: Its Tastes, Treats and Temptations”. Born and raised in Verbicaro, a small town in Calabria, Costantino grew up watching her father, a master cheesemaker and winemaker, mother and grandmothers grow and create food and wines with great care. Now a San Francisco resident, she teaches cooking classes and has written a cookbook My Calabria to be published in 2010 by W. W. Norton.
Calabrians have always made good use of their abundant natural resources. A wide range of rustic dishes draw heavily from both land and sea, including vegetable-filled soups, fish-laden pastas, spicy sausages and cheese platters. For guests at the Discovering Calabria event, Costantino will create a Spaghetti col Sugo di Tonno e Bottarga, or Spaghetti with tuna, garlic, parsley and Tuna Bottarga, which features one of the best kept secrets of Calabria, a buttery, moist tuna jarred in olive oil to capture its rich taste. A buffet of various Calabrian specialty foods and dishes will also be offered in a General Tasting Room where U.S. importers will present to press and trade a selection of wines and specialty foods from Calabria.
Aniello Musella, Italian Trade Commissioner---Executive Director for the USA remarked that, “the Italian Trade Commission together with Regione Calabria is pleased to present Discovering Calabria. Our goal is to introduce the authentic tastes of this remarkable region to the American market. I am confident that both trade and consumers will gain a deep appreciation for these products and their producers who continue to honor age old traditions while successfully employing state-of-the-art technology.”
Discovering Calabria provides a fresh perspective on what makes food and wine authentically Italian. From olive oils to cheeses, and peppers to wines, Calabria offers pure flavors from an unblemished land that now the American market can enjoy. For a listing of stores in New York and online stores offering Calabrian food and wine, see the Discovering Calabria brochure available on the press kit CD.
