Natural mineral waters set themselves apart from the other waters intended for human consumption because of their protected underground origin. Natural mineral waters are recognized as such by the Italian Ministry of Health, that verifies their natural bacteriological purity, the perseverance of mineral salts and their potential health benefits. Italy is a country rich in mineral waters and, considered its orographic constitution, it can rely on natural mineral waters of different origin and composition as a result of its granite rocks, dolomites calcareous and volcanic rocks. Natural mineral waters are on the market both in the form of still and carbonate water. In our country there also are natural effervescent mineral waters, i.e. waters that are born with carbon dioxide inside (especially volcanic water).
In Italy the first trade on mineral water dates back to 1890, due to a strong thermal tradition and to the quality of waters coming from well-known historical springs. The first bottling production plans appeared soon after. In Roman times, water which is today defined as -natural mineral water- was already considered important due to its therapeutic effects, that was observed from empirical evidence other than proper analytical equipment not available at the time.
The production of Italian mineral water has been growing since 1970. Between 1990 and 2000 the production has, in fact, doubled. In recent years i.e. 2015,2016 and 2017, consumption has even increased as a result of the consumer’s awareness of drinking both a healthy and safe product. A particular effort has been made over the years by developing a food safety control protocol (HACCP) . Daily sampling and analysis ensure a-constant- monitoring of mineral water from the spring to the closure of the bottle.
Every mineral water differs for its content of salts, and every water is different from each other: it can be regarded as “Earth’s fingerprint”. Mineral water is the hypocaloric product par excellence and the salts which brings to the body are very helpful. It is sometimes indicated for the prevention of certain diseases such as, for instance, the prevention of osteoporosis. The intake of water with meaningful presence of calcium is highly indicated for the prevention of such a disease, it has no contraindications and it is rapidly absorbed by the body.
