stablished in 1995, the Bagnoli di Sopra D.O.C. covers an area that includes 15 municipalities in the province of Padua (Veneto). The heart of this area is Bagnoli di Sopra, an ancient Longobardic village that grew around the Benedictine monastery of San Michele Arcangelo built in 954 A.D. in a place that had previously been an insalubrious marshland. The history of this monastery and its monks is closely linked to the development of winegrowing at Bagnoli di Sopra. For centuries, the wine produced here had been renowned in the neighboring villages, but its fame never went beyond the local boundaries.
The D.O.C. appellation has overturned this situation and has made it possible for the producers of this wine to compete with other Veneto wines in the domestic and international markets.
One of the most interesting wines of this appellation is the Friularo, a full-bodied red made with the grapes of a local vine called Raboso after an affluent of the River Piave. This is a round, mellow wine that is at its best after at least two years of ageing. In its "Vendemmia Tardiva" (late harvest) version, the grapes are gathered as soon as they start to wither.
