o the south of the ancient city of Ivrea, not too far away from Valle d'Aosta, there lie Lake Viverone and the charming, idyllic hills surrounding it. This area is called Canavese. It is rich in age-old winegrowing traditions and is home to the legendary goddess Albaluce, whose memory is kept alive in the name of the local grapevine: Erbaluce. The first traces of winegrowing activities in this territory can be traced back to pre-Roman times. In the Middle Ages, the communes of Canavese had already set down a series of strict rules for the production and sale of wine. Erbaluce di Caluso D.O.C. was established here in 1967, to which another appellation, the Canavese D.O.C., was added in 1996. This latter appellation includes a traditional white wine obtained from Erbaluce grapes, as well as a number of reds and rosés made with the traditional, local varieties of red grapevines: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Bonarda and Freisa.
