he Casteller production area consists of the strips of hills that, beginning at the border of the province of Verona, extend northward along both banks of the Adige river into the province of Trent. The vineyards are situated at altitudes that do not exceed 600 meters above sea level. Casteller is made from Schiava, Merlot and Lambrusco. Lambrusco a Foglia Frastagliata is more extensively cultivated in Trentino-Alto Adige, and particularly in the Valgarina where it has found an ideal habitat, than any other region of Italy. Its success is due in part to its high level of production. In fact, it often yields as much as 150 quintals a hectare, a rate that puts it on the same level as Schiava Grossa. From a study of varieties cultivated at the end of the last century that was published in 1894 by the director of the Agrarian Institute at San Michele all'Adige, Professor Mach, it is known that Schiava was one of the most extensively cultivated red-grape types in the area. In that period as now, growers preferred the Gentile subvariety of the Schiava family. Schiava Grossa or Nobile was better known as a table than a wine grape and it was in demand throughout Europe under the name Uva Meranese di Cura.
