Colli Maceratesi (DOC)

ne of the oldest and most typical varieties of the Marches is used in making this wine. It is the Maceratino, a clone of Verdicchio, which accounts for a share of 30 to 50 per cent of the grape mixture. Both the variety and the hills on which the grapes used in making the "Clli Maceratesi Bianco" are grown derive their name from Macerata, a town situated in a hilly district that is noted for its vitivinicultural vocation and where the new and the ancient are combined in a harmonious union in which the rural and urban environments have been fully preserved in a naturally satisfying and tranquil context.

The superb views from the town, which arose on the ruins of the Roman community of Helvia Ricina and expanded around an urban nucleus of the 16th century, bring to mind the lyrical descriptions of poet Giacomo Leopardi, who, in nearby Recanati in the early 19th century, composed the verses that have made the hills of the area famous throughout the world.

Since they originate in the same soil, the agricultural products and the delicate and appealingly wines of the Macerata vineyards combine perfectly in the local culinary preparations, which are among the most succulent of the entire region. Among the specialties are the fish dishes of the restaurants along the coast--the brodetto of Porto Recanati is famous--and the curious ciauscolo, a sausage of pork ground three times and preserved in large intestine that is typical of the Apennines and the foothills of that chain. It is excellent spread on bread and eaten as an appetizer. The preparations in broth and the white meats are outstanding as well. And all of the specialties of the Marches are enhanced when they are consumed in company with the white and red wines of Colli Maceratesi area.
