Colli Perugini (DOC)

he production area of the Colli Perugini wines extends southward from Perugia along the right bank of the Tiber amid the hills of central Umbria. Following the granting of the Denominazione di Origine Controllata in 1982, the vineyards underwent a rapid process of overall renewal. Specialization in planting and selection of varieties were carried out with great care in order to achieve a high level of quality.

The area's terrain and climate, as well as exposition, provide a favorable habitat for the grapes, which grow quite lushly in the district. Among the red-grape varieties, in addition to Montepulciano, there are Ciliegiolo, Barbera, Cabernet and Merlot. Within the range of white-grape varieties, Trebbiano Toscano is flanked by Malvasia del Chianti, Grechetto, Chardonnay and Pinot grigio.

From the historical and ampelographical standpoint, it is interesting to note the presence in the Colli Perugini area of some ancient native varieties, such as Mostiola, Tintarolo, Pecorina and Lupeccio. The aptitude for the cultivation of vines of the hills of central Umbria has been established beyond question by numerous experts, who have pointed out that the composition of the area's soils resembles that of the vineyards of Champagne and especially the terrains of the Epernay district.
