he Colli Pesaresi wines are produced in the hills overlooking the city of Pesaro in an area consisting of the territories of 33 communes. The zone extends from the border with the Romagna along the hills sealing in the rivers Foglia, Metauro and Cesano as far as Monte Ardizio outside Fano. The wines are linked in legend with composer Gioacchino Rossini, a native of Pesaro. It is said that, on the day he had to write the famous overture to "The Barber of Seville" at the insistence of his publisher, he managed to complete the task in short order with the aid of the Sangiovese wine of the Colli Pesaresi-in particular, the one produced in the Novilara hills. The first historical citation of Sangiovese is to be found in a book published in 1596 by Andrea Bacci, physician to Sixtus V and professor of botany at the University of Rome. He described as "excellent the wines of Fano, especially those obtained from Malvasie and Trebulane. Good as well are those of the fields and villages near Pesaro, such as Colle Imperiale. All are exported in great quantity to Venice." The Sangiovese dei Colli Pesaresi shares those praises with the Bianchello del Metauro. The history of the recent, prolonged dispute between the growers of the Marches and those of the Romagna over the origins of the Sangiovese variety is much less poetical. The Romagna growers argued that the wine of the Colli Pesaresi could not be recognized as a DOC product because they alone were entitled to use the name of the Sangiovese variety. The Pesaro growers won the battle in 1972, after they demonstrated that Sangiovese had been cultivated in their area for centuries. They also argued that the variety was Tuscan in origin. "According to some," wrote Professor Molon, a noted Italian expert in the field of ampelogaphy, in 1906, "the variety originated in Chianti."
