he millennial history of Falerio dei Colli Ascolani is written in the name, typically Roman, of the wine, which, in turn, was derived from that of the ancient city of Faleria. The name was later changed to Falerio Picenus and, today, the community is known as Falerone. The Falerio dei Colli Ascolani, like the ruins of the amphitheater and the Roman temple that can still be admired in the town of Falerone, is a surviving testimonial to the outstanding reputation the wines of Picenum enjoyed in the period of the Roman Empire. The Falerio production zone, as defined by the DOC discipline, includes virtually the whole of the grape-growing area of the province of Ascoli Piceno. It extends from the foothills of the Apennines to the Adriatic coast. Only the Rosso Piceno vineyards in the eastern part of the area are excluded. The hills between Falerone and Fermo, where the Falerio vineyards are now situated, witnessed the beginning of the brief military career of the famous Roman philosopher and orator Cicero, who at the age of 18 served in the army of Pompeius Strabo in a battle, which the Romans lost, with a Picenian force. References to the wine of Faleria going back to the 13th century have been found in the archives of the commune of Fermo and there is mention as well of the adoption of the ancient technique of cooking down the must to concentrate its sugar (vin cotto), a practice that has survived to the present day although the amount of wine made by it is quite limited. Like the Falerio dei Colli Ascolini itself, Passerina and Pecorino, two of the varieties used in making it along with Trebbiano, Malvasia, Verdicchio and Pinot Bianco, boast extensive pedigrees. They are varieties of an extremely ancient tradition--some ampeolographers argue that the Passerina is the descendant of the Psythia mentioned by the Latin poet Virgil. Both clearly originated in the Marches, although the Pecorino has spread into neighboring Umbria. And both have strong personalities in terms of flavor that have made them indispensable ingredients of the Falerio and Rosso Piceno wines.
