Friuli Latisana (DOC)

he strip of land extending from the Adriatic coast toward the interior, for about 30 kilometers, and from the border between the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia toward the east, widening out as it approaches the drainage basin of the Isonzo, is a lowland with soils consisting of alluvial deposits of clay, lime and sand.

Today there are two different Denominazioni di Origine Controllata covering the wines made in the lower plain. Toward the west are the wines of Latisana, while those of Aquileia are situated to the east.

The Latisana district is located on the left bank of the Tagliamento and the town was for many centuries a busy river port. Today, it is a prosperous agricultural center.

The lower plain has a long, winemaking tradition and the cultivation of vines is still an important part of the zone's life. The ancient Greek chronicler, in discussing the life of the Emperor Maximinian, described the flourishing vineyards of the lower plain at considerable length.
