oazzolo earned its D.O.C. appellation in 1990, although it has been produced locally for several centuries. Loazzolo is a sweet white wine, a passito, obtained from the late harvest of Moscato grapes in the territories of Loazzolo, a small village with a population of 300 in the province of Asti, in Piedmont. It is situated on hills facing Liguria. It is this particular location that has blessed Loazzolo with its temperate, Riviera-like climate.Loazzolo boasts Italy's tiniest D.O.C. area. The D.O.C. regulation specifies that all winemaking operations for the production of this wine must be carried out in the tiny territory of Loazzolo. The vines here are very old and are planted in very steep ground at a minimum altitude of 1,360 feet above sea level. The vineyards all enjoy optimal exposure. After the harvest, the grapes are arranged on racks, where they are left to dry - a procedure that augments the aroma. The partially dried up grapes are then pressed using traditional methods that allow to keep the characteristics of the grapes intact. The must is then left to ferment for over a year in old tufaceous cellars without ever being centrifuged or pasteurized. Loazzolo is bottled and sold two years after the vintage, but most experts agree that it should be allowed another year in the bottle for its bouquet to develop fully. Loazzolo has a straw-yellow color with golden hues and an intense, musky and fruity bouquet. To the palate, it is sweet and raisiny. It is a perfect end-of-the-meal match for desserts as well as for ripe cheeses and strong Robiola.
