he hills around Montefalco, to the south of Perugia in the heart of Umbria, represent the richest and most varied grape-growing and winemaking district in the region. The vinicultural tradition of the district originated in the Middle Ages through the work of the Benedictines, who put waste land into cultivation and planted some of the most ancient and typical Umbrian varieties. The popularity of Sagrantino di Montefalco (now a D.O.C.G. wine) has overshadowed the other wines produced in this part of Umbria. However, these wines were so highly regarded in the past centuries that a body of laws had been specifically created in the 1400s to regulate their production. Moreover, a law was passed in 1540 that established, on a yearly basis, the date of the harvest. Back to our times, the old Montefalco D.O.C. has been modified to create, in addition to the Sagrantino di Montefalco D.O.C.G., the Montefalco D.O.C. appellation, which covers a red and a white variety that can now take advantage of their greater sibling's fame and popularity to establish an independent presence of their own on the wine market.
