he river Piave divides the area above the city of Treviso into two hilly zones, each of which is a center of winemaking. On the left bank of the Piave are the vineyards that produce the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene wines, while the vines that yield the wines of the Montello and Colli Asolani denomination are situated on the right bank. The areas confront one another enologically as well as geographically, for each makes its own version of the Prosecco. As a result of variations in the geological composition of the soils of the two areas, the Prosecco of the right bank differs slightly from the more famous wine of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene in that it has a light and unmistakable almondy aftertaste. In terms of production, Prosecco is the most important wine of the Montello e Colli Asolani DOC denomination. Ranking immediately behind it is the Merlot, with a good level of output, although the amount steadily declines at every harvest. The quantity of Cabernet, which did not appear significant at the time the DOC was authorized, is constantly increasing and the wine is winning an ever-wider circle of admirers.
