he Moscato di Noto was created slightly more than half a century ago in the Experimental Winery of Noto, a commune in the province of Syracuse. The objective, fully attained, of the creators was to overcome the major handicap of Moscato di Siracusa--its considerable variability--and obtain a wine that could be drunk in its youth, without the necessity of a prolonged period of aging, as well as a product that was finer and more perfumed. The technical improvement was so significant that, at the first Exhibition-Market of Italian Typical Wines in 1933, only the Moscato di Nolo and not the Moscato di Siracusa was presented. Without doubt, it was unjust treatment for a wine with a reputation that went back many centuries but, at the same time, the decision fully recognized the validity of the improvement achieved in the production techniques of Moscato di Noto. Produced in limited quantity, the wine is something of a rare gem. It is a particularly attractive wine, indisputably one of the most appealing Moscatos in Italy, and it is a credit to Sicilian enology. It deserves to be more widely distributed, since it offers the scents and flavors of the land that produces it and represents a worthy addition to the world's cellar of fine wines.
