Rosso Orvietano or Orvietano Rosso (DOC)

rvieto is a great white wine rich with tradition and history. Through the centuries it has become a symbol of the city of Orvieto, no less than its magnificent architectural and artistic treasures.

In the '80s, when a general ferment started in the Italian winemaking industry, Orvieto vintners were faced with a major issue. They had to decide whether to adopt new grapevine varieties and innovative winemaking techniques or stick to their proven, age-old winegrowing traditions that had for centuries guided them in making a wine that was still in great demand.

n the end, they decided to make a few technical improvements to the production of Orvieto and to channel their desire for innovation to the production of red wines instead. The outcome is this new D.O.C. appellation in which traditional grapes like Aleatico, Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo are combined with imported varieties, such as Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot Noir, to produce a red wine that has every reason to become as famous as the Orvieto white.
