he production area of the Valdadige wines is shared by three provinces in two regions: Bolzano and Trento in Trentino-Alto Adige and Verona in the Veneto. The province of Trento, however, accounts for the greater part of production. There, as in the rest of the region, grape growing and winemaking have extremely ancient roots. It appears, in fact, that the Illyrian peoples, who originated in Greece, introduced the first vines into the region. That hypothesis was substantially confirmed by the discovery in the region in 1825 of a situla, or vessel used in offering libations of wine to the gods, that has been dated to the 7th or 6th centuries BC. The situla, which is today considered the symbol of regional vitiviniculture, is preserved in the Castello del Buonconsiglio at Trento.Because of the large number of varieties cultivated, the Valdadige production zone turns out wines that are quite dissimilar, one from another. However, they do have a pronounced personality that is readily identifiable.
