Vignanello (DOC)

ignanello D.O.C. is produced in the charming, hilly territory of Vignanello in the province of Viterbo, north of Rome. The hills here slope down from Monte Cimino towards the Tiber. Man has settled here since prehistoric times. There is historical evidence that in the current location of Molesino, one of the neighborhoods of Vignanello, there was an Etruscan settlement that had its necropolis in a nearby valley known as Valle della Cupa, the "sullen valley."

The historical center of Vignanello is built on a slab of tuff. It is a dense maze of constructions protected on three sides by deep valleys and on the fourth, by a castle. Some people claim that the current nucleus of Vignanello was built by the Romans who were running away from marauding Visigoths in 410 A.D. Others say it was built in 412 and was first called Giulianello in the honor of Julia, daughter of the King of Pontus, who had fallen into disgrace and had been banished here. Giulianello then became Vilianello and, eventually, Vignanello. Local tradition has it that this last transformation was due to the fact there was a vine ("vigna" in Italian) growing in the middle of the village square. Whatever the reason, the view on the surrounding countryside reveals that there couldn't be a better name for this place: as far as the eye sees, there is vineyard after vineyard.

The wine produced here is fresh and very supple, excellent for every day use and as a match for the simple dishes of the local cuisine. It is not to be aged. Among the different types of wine allowed by the Vignanello D.O.C. regulations, the Greco deserves special notice. It is made with a minimum of 85% Greco grapes. It has a fairly good character especially in its sparkling version.
