Riesi (DOC)

he name Riesi derives from "rieses," a Latin word meaning "uncultivated land" - a reference to the state of neglect of this territory in ancient times. Historical data on the feudal territory of Riesi goes back to the 13th Century, but the present town was founded in 1647, when people from the surrounding areas were given asylum here and the town became the dominion of the princely house of Pignatelli.

For many centuries, this territory, in the province of Caltanissetta, was marginal in the production of Sicilian wine. But in the past few decades there has been an explosion of vineyards that have allowed Riesi to be first included in the Cerasuolo di Vittoria D.O.C. appellation and then be awarded, in 2001, a separate D.O.C. thanks to the personality of their wine, produced with the traditional grape varieties of Frappato, Calabrese and Ansonica and imported ones, like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

This has been made possible thanks to the initiative of a very small group of winemakers who, fully aware of the qualitative potential of their produce, have had the courage to abandon the production of blending wines in pursuit of the affirmation of the quality of their own wine.
