Terreni di San Severino (DOC)

he area where I Terreni di Sanseverino D.O.C. is produced has been known for centuries for its excellent exposure to sunlight and for the ideal altitude of its hills, which provide exceptional conditions for growing grapes that yield equally exceptional wines. This area includes the entire territory of the commune of San Severino Marche, in the valley of the river Potenza, in the province of Macerata.

The wine produced in this area is mentioned in fourteenth century documents preserved in the historic archives of the commune. Because of its fine quality, this wine was often offered to authorities and influential people in return for favors and benefits. In 1370, for instance, on the occasion of the investiture of Smenduccio di Nunzio della Scala of the Vicariate of San Severino, the Consul and the local authorities sent 878 liters of this wine to Pope Urban V as a token of recognition. Likewise, in 1458, some 97 barrels and 30 demijohns of it were ordered for the feasts that followed the investiture of Pope Pius II.
