he province of Padua is fundamentally flat. But in the center of that vast plain, completely isolated, rise the rounded cones of the Colli Euganei. The hills are of volcanic origin so that their soils are rich in mineral substances and, therefore, are highly suited to the cultivation of vines.Evidence concerning the production and sale of wine in the area goes back to the first millennium BC and both activities have been conducted without interruption to the present day. The noted Italian poet Francesco Petrarca became so fascinated by the Colli Euganei that he bought a bouse in the hills, at Arquà, in 1373. His choice was dictated in part by the goodness of the wine produced in the immediate area. According to a custom that was widely diffused throughout Italy, shoots of various varieties were planted in a single vineyard. In more recent times, the need for a more rational system of cultivation has led growers to renew the vineyards in their entirety, which has profoundly changed the production profile of the Colli Euganei. The new approach to grape-growing and winemaking was adopted in the sixties with the introduction of specialized vineyards and, at that time, considerable space was set aside for Moscato, Tocai, Merlot and Cabernet vines.
